One Day Workshops

These Workshops are $50.00/person/day and run daily from 10:00 – 4:00

Hilda Van Netten -Painting with watercolours can be a daunting task.  In this course you will explore the fun properties of watercolours.  No need to have drawing skills.  We’ll explore watercolour techniques and then practise what we’ve learned on a few sketches.  Great class for the novice.

Customer testimonial:

“Just wanted to get back to you and thank you for the very helpful workshop in Cobourg at the Painted Tree on Saturday.  I learned a lot and I think it finally sunk in what is happening when my drawings turn out wrong.  When my left-brain can’t immediately figure out how to draw something, my right brain kicks in and fills in the blanks.  Driving back home on Saturday, it occurred to me that I could use much more of this training.  But, of course, I realize it’s a learning process and I have to practice what I learned over time.   So thank you for introducing me to the concept. “  Mary B

*New Workshops – Abstract in Oil coming  Saturday April 28th!

Heather Roy - An abstract piece is not an attempt to represent something realistically.  Abstract work has an idea behind it,which may be obvious to the viewers, or only to the artist. Rather than representing a thing, the idea may be a memory, sensation, emotion.  Colour, shape/line, composition and texture are used to evoke sensation and associations in the viewer. The same principles of what “works” as a successful piece of art, are applied to abstract art and realistic art.

I say this because some people think abstract means “let it all hang out”, when it’s actually quite difficult to create without a model of some kind (an actual thing in front of you, a photograph or a picture in your mind of what you think something looks like).
Abstract art can be done in a very scientific and calculated way (like Josef Albers and his squares), or it can be done more intuitively.
I work intuitively, and encourage people to “let the piece emerge”, instead of doing a plan before beginning.
In the morning portion of the workshop, I do a variety of activities to try and get them moving towards something they want to start with – maybe a set of colours, a place, a feeling or even a design.  I also introduce basic principles of art, like balance, for beginners.
Some people are very clear on what they are striving for, others less so, but the process allows for the work to develop into a new direction.

*NEW* 2012 class with Sandy Goguen

Knife Painting with Acrylics, Saturday June 16th

Sandy will lead a class with an introduction to using a painting knife rather than a brush, including selecting a suitable knife to get you started. Painting with a knife is a bit like putting butter or jam on bread and produces quite a different result to a brush. Painting knives are excellent for producing textured, impasto work and sweeping areas of flat color as well as tiny shapes of color. The range of marks you can produce when painting with a knife rather than a brush is quite varied, and can produce beautiful effects.
